nogerontology: New Directions in the Awareness of DiversityTerry L. Mills\
, Ph.D.\, DeanDivision of Humanities & Social SciencesMorehouse CollegePre
sentation SummaryThis presentation addresses important issues related to t
he demographic imperative of cultural competence that an increasingly dive
rse older adult population mandates. Thus\, it may be more appropriate to
describe the phenomena of longer life in the U.S. as the "browning of Amer
ica\," rather than the "graying of America" as has been the previous chara
cterization.Dr. Mills is a Professor in the Sociology Department of Moreho
use College\, where he is also dean of the Division of Humanities & Social
Sciences. His Ph.D. is in Sociology from the University of Southern Calif
ornia.Speaker's Research InterestsDr. Mills' research focuses on social\,
environmental\, and physical health factors associated with late-life depr
ession and intergenerational relationships\, especially among grandparents
and their grandchildren. He is a Deputy Editor of the Journal of Family I
ssues\, and a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Applied Ger
ontology. Additionally\, he has been an ad-hoc reviewer for the Journals o
f Gerontology: Social Sciences and Psychological Science\, Research in Agi
ng\, Family Relations\, Journal of the National Medical Association\, and
Journal of Aging Studies. Since 2004\, he has served on the NIH National A
dvisory Council on Aging\, most recently also serving as Chair\, NIA Taskf
orce on Minority Aging.Presented courtesy of the Mary Thompson Foundation-

DESCRIPTION:Wayne State University's College of Fine\, Performing and Commu
nication Arts is proud to present the exhibition Asia on the Edge: Photogr
aphs by Reagan Louie in the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery from September 19 thro
ugh November 7\, 2008. Asia on the Edge is culled from several recent seri
es of California fine art photographer Reagan Louie. Approximately 50 phot
ographs feature images of building sites in Hong Kong\, workers in capitol
cities\, school children in parks\, soldiers\, and civilians in towns tha
t Louie passed through during his extensive travels in Asia over the past
20 years. In each large-scale photograph (some are as large as 4 by 6 feet
)\, Louie poignantly captures a cultural landscape where past and present
uncomfortably co-exist through details of face\, dress\, and architecture.
In his jarring and sumptuous photographs\, Louie explores the striking cl
ashes of East and West\, past and future\, and local and global\, in a tim
e of phenomenal transition.Louie holds a BFA from the University of Califo
rnia\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, and an MFA from Yale University. He is Chair o
f the department and Associate Professor of Photography at the San Francis
co Art Institute. His work has been exhibited at the San Francisco Museum
of Modern Art\, with a catalogue published by powerHouse Books. His 1991 b
ook\, Toward a Truer Life: Photographs of China 1980-1990\, published by A
perture\, received critical acclaim. Louie's work is in numerous collectio
ns\, including in those of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, The Mu
seum of Modern Art (New York)\, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.The art
ist has been the recipient of many awards\, including Guggenheim and Fulbr
ight fellowships\, the James D. Phelan Art Award\, two National Endowment
for the Arts grants\, and the Dorothea Lange/Paul Taylor prize.

DESCRIPTION:Balancing privacy and security in the age of cyberterrorTuesday
October 7\, 3:00-4:30  PMSteve Worona Director of Policy and Networking P
rograms\, EDUCAUSE230 years ago\, Patrick Henry (Delegate from Virginia) s
aid\, "Give me Liberty\, or give me Death!" More recently\, Patrick Robert
s (Senator from Kansas) said\, "You have no civil liberties if you're dead
." The stark contrast was unintended\, but perfectly illustrates the outli
nes of a national debate\, largely unspoken\, but coming soon to a street
corner or a ballot box -- or a quadrangle -- near you. The often-heard ma
ntra "There is no privacy without security" is far too glib. Technology ha
s given us the ability to create a surveillance society beyond anything Ge
orge Orwell could have imagined. Our limitations are no longer external bu
t internal: We will have to choose how much privacy we're willing to sacri
fice for security. This presentation describes some of the difficult trade
offs we'll need to consider\, both as citizens and as campus administrator
s.This talk is sponsored by Computing & Information Technology\, Universit
y Libraries\, and the Department of Computer Science\, and is in observanc
e of National Cyber Security Awareness Month.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for demo night on October 15\, 2008 at the Wayne State
University Undergraduate Library. Celebrate with us as we have our first R
efresh Detroit meeting in the city of Detroit! Refresh Detroit is part of
the Refreshing Cities\, a community of designers and developers working to
refresh the creative\, technical\, and professional culture of New Media
endeavors in their areas. They are looking for people who will demo their
  creation\, design\, illustration\, application\, tool\, or product. Each
person has five to ten minutes to present and answer questions. Our demo n
ight last spring was such a success\, we had to extend it to the next mont
h to allow everyone to show off their latest work! Demo night is a great o
pportunity to share your work\, see what others have been working on\, and
get feedback on works in progress. Special thanks to Heidi Hansen who org
anized this event\, and to our sponsors: ASIS&T Student Chapter at Wayne S

m Where: Wayne State University Undergraduate Library\, 5155 Gullen Mall\,
Detroit\, Michigan 48202 (map). We're meeting in the Community Room on th

Parking Structure #2 on Anthony Wayne Drive\, which is a short walk down W
illiams Mall to the Undergraduate Library. Parking Structure #5 is another
option (it's next to Parking Structure #2). For visitors\, parking is $3.
75 at the gate\, quarters or dollar bills only. Note: there is metered par
king\, but it's only for one hour\; the parking garage is likely the best
option. When: Wednesday\, October 15\, 2008 6:30PM-8PM Interested in demoi
ng your work? RSVP by commenting on the Refresh Detroit web site with your
name and application/design/tool/product\, so we have an idea of how many
